I discovered the news about Paris through Facebook and not too long after, everyone’s profile pictures and Instagram feeds started featuring red, white, and blue flags and Eiffel tower sketches. The hashtag #prayforparis also emerged.
Pray for Paris, pray for Paris, pray for Paris. I was astonished at how this tag came up above all others, claiming the posture of prayer before such an unimaginable tragedy. My main question was, how do I pray for Paris? What are all of these people using this hashtag praying?
I held this question in mind and then during last night’s spontaneous evening collect reading, came across the Lord’s Prayer. And I think that this is one of the best prayers to pray – at any time – but particularly during this time of fear, uncertainty, and chaos. This is the prayer Jesus taught his disciples would be a prayer to use for all times ahead.
For those looking for words to pray for Paris, and for our world, in uncertain times, I’m pasting the text below. May the words guide your heart to the Lord and cause you to trust in Him. He is our Father, and in introducing this text to his disciples, Jesus promises that He already knows our great need.
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
